Ardagh Group has published a second metal packaging design book entitled ‘Why Metal?’. This volume, with many advanced reader-friendly features, contains important insights, interviews and a host of eye-catching examples that showcase the scope of metal packaging to shape, decorate and add convenience to brands from around the world.

The book inspires, and sometimes challenges, designers and marketing professionals on the limitless possibilities and beauty of metal packaging, with stunning images, thought provoking articles and interviews. Following Ardagh Group’s recent entry into metal beverage can manufacturing the company will, for the first time, feature beverage cans alongside its award winning glass packaging, beer kegs and aluminium bottles at Brau Beviale 2016 (Stand 4A/225).

The company’s focus this year will be geared towards innovation and sustainability, showcasing recent developments that offer all beverage categories the widest choice in packaging solutions and, as one of the world’s largest packaging companies, access to unrivalled and integrated R&D facilities.

By being infinitely recyclable without loss of quality, glass and metal packaging are united via their unique status as permanent materials. Several best in class examples of this will be on display, and visitors can explore how to maximise sustainability into their brand packaging.

Fresh thinking has always been a popular theme on the Ardagh stand but at Brau 2016, some of the emerging technologies that in previous years have been compelling talking points have now become reality. Sculptured embossing – the ability to create sharper images on the surface of a bottle – and the creation of new decorative finishes, such as organic acid etch and sparkle effects and patterns through powdered coating, are two examples where Ardagh is leading the industry in glass packaging.

Innovation is also a central feature of the metal packaging section of the stand, where visitors can see how Ardagh’s interactive printing technology which embeds an invisible unique watermark code in print ready artwork can add a host of marketing possibilities for brands as well as provide a secured way for anticounterfeiting. 07 September 2016, Noida (India): Demonstrating its proactive engineering approach, India’s largest multinational flexible packaging materials and Solution Company, Uflex Limited has launched ESL Aseptic Flexi-Pouch Machine for packaging milk that can extend the shelf life of the product up to 90 days. Uflex is the only company in India to manufacture this kind of sophisticated machines.

Milk is a perishable product and extremely susceptible to infestation by bacteria and other micro-organisms. Milk brands sold in pouches across India have for long been fretting about the restricted shelf life; time elapsed during the supply & distribution; optimum pasteurization; necessity of cold chain to be integrated within the overall supply chain and so on so forth. To alleviate all these problems in one go, Uflex has manufactured and launched ESL Aseptic Flexi-Pouch Machine for packaging milk. Milk sterilised and packed in this machine can be kept in normal ambient conditions at the point of sale for as long as 90 days.

This machine packs milk in a pouch that is formed of a five to seven layer extruded/blown polyethylene film with strong barrier properties including a black layer for U.V. protection. As a fully integrated packaging solution provider, Uflex offers the especially extruded/blown film too.

Official Release / (1) Uflex September /2016 The machine has an inbuilt automatic CIP and SIP system and can pack milk in SKUs ranging from 70ml to 1500ml volumetrically. The filling speed for these variants ranges between 5000 to 2500 packs per head per hour. On a specially programmed B&R and Siemens PLC fitted to this machine, altering the desired volumes to be filled can be actuated at the press of a button spelling utmost convenience for the milk companies.

The machine has been manufactured with a special Isolation Valve (Sterile Interlock) that does not allow the milk to flow from the UHT to the filling machine in case sterilisation of milk in UHT is incomplete or does not conform to the set specifications. This spares unnecessary invocation of intermediate CIP and SIP of the filling machine avoiding wastage of time. Gravity Filling System with Precise Tank Level Regulation has been provided in this machine. ESL Flexi-Pouch Machine can be customised with Single, Two or Three Head filling arrangement as per the requirement of the client. This versatile machine is also capable of simultaneously packaging differential volumes on various heads. The ESL Aseptic Flexi-Pouch Machine is fitted with Impulse Sealing system especially imported from USA that ensures a perfect leak proof seal.

A typical Two Head ESL Aseptic Flexi-Pouch Machine requires 415 V AC, three phase, 50Hz supply. The power consumption at peak load is 20KVA. This machine requires steam at a pressure of 4 Bar with 0.5 kg/hr consumption during production and 70 kg/hr during sterilisation.

Group to take part in the third edition of Sitevinitech, a key Argentinian fair at the centre of one of South America's - and the world's - most important wine- making regions. Sacmi will be showcasing complete, integrated filling and labelling lines.

Over 13,000 industry professionals are expected to attend the third edition of Sitevinitech – stand 62/70 HB, the international fair to be held from 27 th to 29 th October 2016 in the city of Mendoza which lies at the centre of one of the biggest wine-making districts in Argentina and all South America. The world's fifth-largest wine producer, the seventh-largest in terms of vineyard surface area (over 230 million hectares), Argentina represents a strategic outlet market for the complete filling lines designed and built by Sacmi.

A distinctive characteristic of Sacmi solutions is its range of Bag-In- Box fillers. Sidel, the leading provider of production equipment and services for liquids in PET, has announced that it will be taking part in ProPak West Africa - the region’s largest international show for the packaging, printing and plastics industries. Taking place in Lagos, Nigeria, from 20 - 22 September 2016, the event will mark the debut of Sidel in the West African version of the show and is part of its commitment to supporting beverage producers in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

The increasing personal wealth of Nigeria’s inhabitants has the potential for a possible ‘westernisation’ of consumer spending habits. This, along with the growing population, means that the market in the area is one of vast potential for producers. The soft drinks segment of the market is driven by bottled water. Over the past six years, consumption of bottled water has more than doubled in volume from 18.9 billion litres to 38.8 billion litres. To a much lesser extent the market is made up of sales of carbonated soft drinks (CSDs), milk and juice. The second largest category - CSDs - increased from 1.4 billion litres to 2.1 billion litres during the same period. Over the next four years to 2020, consumption of bottled water is expected to increase to 52.4 billion litres. Sales of CSDs are anticipated to reach 2.6 billion litres, while juice and milk are expected to attain sales figures of 1.0 and 0.1 billion litres respectively 11 .

In this dynamically expanding marketplace, Sidel will be showcasing its innovative complete line solutions. These solutions help beverage producers, particularly those competing in the fiercely competitive bottled water market, to capitalise on the opportunities that are presenting themselves. Sidel has undertaken many successful projects in Africa. In Nigeria, a bottling line is producing carbonated cola at the Ikeja plant of the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), the country’s major plant for the production of Coca-Cola brands. As the sole franchise bottler for the Coca-Cola Company in Nigeria, NBC is producing PET bottles in 500ml formats at a capacity of 42,000 bottles per hour (bph) and in 1,500ml formats at 22,000 bph. Fruital Coca-Cola has a Sidel complete PET line operating at its Algiers plant, with a smooth installation process that allowed production of CSDs in 1 litre and 2 litre formats at 18,000 and 16,000 bph respectively. Guedila, Algeria's leading supplier of bottled mineral water, were supported by Sidel in a project to install a new 36,000 bph line with two high-capacity accumulation tables and a completely robotised end-of- line after redesigning its bottle. In Morocco, Les Eaux Minérales d'Oulmès worked with Sidel to carry out improvements in the design and resistance of its packaging - with the line changes fully implemented in a tight timeframe to meet the company's peak production period.

Over 3,000 visitors are expected to attend ProPak West Africa 2016, part of the ProPak series which also stages events in East Africa and Asia. The event is dedicated to providing the latest developments in the packaging, plastics and labelling industries. The three-day show will be staged at the Landmark Events Centre in Lagos, Nigeria, and is set to attract visitors from all segments of the supply chain.

AMI, Bristol, 25/08/16 BOPET film is one of the fastest growing polymer substrates with demand expected to top 4 million tonnes this year, a growth of over 1 million tonnes since 2010, according to a new report from leading industry consultants, AMI Consulting. Market demand has been driven by its extensive use in both packaging and technical applications thanks to its unique combination of properties, excellent processability and adhesion to coatings and adhesives.

The versatility of BOPET films combined with rapid end-use technology developments creates emerging opportunities for BOPET but it also comes with certain volatility. The rapid demise of BOPET-based magnetic tapes for music and video cassettes following the development of CDs is an example of how applications can come and go. At the same time though new applications continue to emerge. Photovoltaics is the fastest growing application which has seen growth of 29% per year since 2010 driven by an increased demand for renewable energy sources often supported by government initiatives. Display and optical films is another application which has seen double digit growth driven by expanding sales smart phones, tablets and flat screen TVs.

In terms of absolute volume growth, packaging has grown the most which is most evident in emerging markets, particularly in China and India. However, the increasingly competitive and commodity nature of traditional packaging film markets is driving producers to seek added value opportunities through either diversification into thick films, technical applications or investment in secondary processing such as metallisation or offline coating. New investments are increasingly in hybrid lines capable of making a range of films that cut across the traditional supply divisions between thin films (<50 micron) and thick films (50-350 micron) as companies look to diversify their portfolio.

Strong growth in demand led to tight supply and relatively high margins in 2010-11, resulting in a boom in investment in the BOPET business. This has driven an explosion in new capacity in recent years, with an additional 2.4 million tonnes installed since 2010. However, while global capacity increased by over 70%, demand only increased by half that rate which has led to significant oversupply.

This oversupply scenario combined with the falling crude oil prices have resulted in weak pricing and poor margins making the operating environment for BOPET film producers increasingly challenging. “Much of this new added capacity has derived from high productivity low-cost operations with a focus on flexible packaging applications,” says AMI Consulting Senior Market Analyst Márta Babits. “This has put pressure on heritage businesses with older and less efficient assets particularly for the production of low-cost commodity grades in developed markets of North America, Europe and North East Asia.” The industry has seen many of these companies shifting their focus on specialised technologies and high-end added value applications. At the same time, some, such as DuPont Teijin, have decided to close down obsolete plants as part of cost cutting measures.

The structure of the industry is becoming increasingly fragmented driven by the entry of emerging new players in recent years. The Top 10 producers accounted for over 60% of the total production ten years ago and for less than 50% today while there are many more manufacturers holding smaller market shares. The largest producers worldwide include DuPont Teijin Films, Flex Films, Jiangsu Shuangxing Color Plastic New Materials, Mitsubishi Polyester Film, SKC Films and Toray Films.

AMI Consulting forecasts that demand overall will reach 5.2 million tonnes to 2020, a CAGR 2015-20 of 6%, but growth in some developing countries will be well above the average. “The industry will continue to bring value added opportunities but to maintain market power, industry players need to anticipate change and formulate response strategies quickly and direct R&D investment accordingly” concluded Márta Babits.

Particularly when accelerating quickly or driving on the freeway, the injection of additional water makes it possible to reduce fuel consumption by up to 13 percent. “With our water injection, we show that the combustion engine still has some tricks up its sleeve,” says Dr. Rolf Bulander, chairman of the Bosch Mobility Solutions business sector and member of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH. The fuel economy offered by this Bosch technology comes especially to the fore in three- and four-cylinder downsized engines: in other words, in precisely the kind of engines to be found under the hood of any average midsize car.

Extra boost for the turbocharged engine
But it is not only in the area of fuel economy that the Bosch innovation comes into play. It can make cars more powerful as well. “Water injection can deliver an extra kick in any turbocharged engine,” says Stefan Seiberth, president of the Gasoline Systems division at Bosch. Earlier ignition angles mean that the engine is operated even more efficiently. On this basis, engineers can coax additional power out of the engine, even in powerful sports cars.

The basis of this innovative engine technology is a simple fact: an engine must not be allowed to overheat. To stop this happening, additional fuel is injected into nearly every gasoline engine on today’s roads. This fuel evaporates, cooling parts of the engine block. With water injection, Bosch engineers have exploited this physical principle. Before the fuel ignites, a fine mist of water is injected into the intake duct. Water’s high heat of vaporization means that it provides effective cooling.

This is also the reason only a small additional volume of water is needed: for every one hundred kilometers driven, only a few hundred milliliters are necessary. As a result, the compact water tank that supplies the injection system with distilled water only has to be refilled every few thousand kilometers at the most.

And if the tank should run empty, there is nothing to worry about: the engine will still run smoothly – albeit without the higher torque and lower consumption provided by water injection.

Additional questions and answers

Is this technology already in production?
The BMW M4 GTS is the first production vehicle to feature an innovative and groundbreaking water injection system. In the vehicle’s turbocharged six-cylinder engine, it offers improved performance and consumption even at full load. Bosch supplies water injection parts for the BMW M4 GTS.

How high is fuel consumption in the driving cycle?
In the future consumption test (WLTC), water injection makes it possible to save up to 4 percent fuel. In real driving conditions, even more is possible: here, fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 13 percent when accelerating quickly or driving on the freeway.

Doesn’t water injection cause the engine to rust?
No. No water is left in the combustion chamber. The water evaporates before combustion happens in the engine. All the water is expelled into the environment, together with the exhaust.

How is water refilled?
Water injection only requires a small amount of water to be kept on board. On average, it only has to be refilled every 3,000 kilometers. The separate water tank has to be filled with distilled water.

Can the water in the tank freeze?
When the engine is stopped, the water flows back into its tank, where it may freeze. Following engine restart, the water thaws again.

Is there such a thing as direct water injection?
Bosch uses a port injection system, since it has clear technical advantages and costs less. This makes water injection suitable for large-scale production, as well as for many vehicle segments.

The winner of the Packaging Europe Sustainability Awards 2016 is the unique solid board enriched with tomato plant fibres, produced by SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS. This competition was organized for the second time by Packaging Europe, the renowned, international trade magazine about packaging. In each of the eight categories a winner was elected and the solid board enriched with tomato plant fibres won in the category ‘biobased packaging'.

Together with their partners in the Westland (the area in The Netherlands known for greenhouse horticulture), SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS developed a procedure to produce solid board using tomato plants. The fact that the same land produces both the tomatoes and the resources for their packaging was the deciding factor to win the Packaging Europe Sustainability Awards 2016. Basically, tomatoes can be packed using ‘their own’ plant fibres. This innovation may reduce the emission of CO2 for each ton of board (appr. 200 boxes for 6 kg / 13 lbs tomatoes) by 54,500 g CO2 eq. In other words, the equivalent of a CO2 emission when driving 420 kilometres (260 miles) by car.

Every year, approximately 1800 Dutch hectares produce 85 million kilos of tomato plants and their life cycle usually ends when they are composted. However, together with waste paper, the plant residue can now be used to produce high grade, recyclable solid board. A hectare of tomato plants will produce 100,000 tomato boxes (trays of 6 kilogram), which is exactly what is needed to pack the 600 tons of tomatoes that the same hectare produces every year. This year's crop therefore provides next year's packing! Obviously, the board equivalent of these 100,000 trays may be used for other kinds of packaging.

A unique cooperation, called Bio Base Westland, involving growers, green waste processors, board mills, research institutions, universities, consultants and councils, led to a win-win situation. Growers may now buy the solid board packing, which has been enriched by their own plants, ‘back’ to pack their own tomatoes. SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS and Van Vliet Contrans will continue to optimise the process of making board out of tomato plants.

SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS has already developed the very first 3 and 5 kg solid board tomato boxes, enriched with tomato plant fibres, for The Greenery. For Harvest House, SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS produced the first 250 to 500 g tomato trays for consumers. Working alongside herbal liqueur brand Jägermeister and print/coating specialist PSL Hehlen; Ardagh’s glass factory in Nienburg, Germany, has supported the launch of a limited edition range for the iconic 0.7L Jägermeister square bottle.

The collection comprises 800,000 bottles in 18 different screen printed versions, with the flags of the nations who competed in the 2016 European Football Championships in France, for sale into those specific countries.

To screen print the flags directly onto the surface of a square green bottle represented a significant challenge for the decoration team, and one that was met through careful pre- planning and a meticulously organised production process using organic UV inks.

Usually, it is necessary to have a white underlayer to achieve bright colours on a green bottle. This was not possible because of the highly detailed artwork, and it was necessary to find an alternative method. This was achieved by developing highly pigmented and tailor- made inks for this specific project and by using specific screens and squeegees that result in a much higher level of ink film on the bottle.

These specific tools also helped to overcome the challenges of square bottles and made it possible to realise such a large printing area without having any printing errors or visible colour variations. The UV inks themselves guaranteed a highly glossy surface, sharp edges and the realisation of strict PMS colours. The result was a very distinctive bottle with excellent shelf stand out presence.

Berlin (Germany), 08/08/2016: The blow-moulding machine manufacturer BEKUM is extending its electrical series EBLOW. The newest addition is the EBLOW 37 for packaging applications. It premiers at the K 2016 to specialists in the industry. As early as 2007 BEKUM presented the first electric blow-moulding machine at the K- Messe (plastics trade fair) in Duesseldorf. The continual development of the machine range was followed by the introduction of the EBLOW 07 series with patented C- frames.

The newest development of the Berlin technology leader is the EBLOW 37, a blow-moulding machine for high-performance production of blow-moulded articles, especially for canisters. With this model BEKUM is looking to win points in the packaging sector, particularly from producers who are interested in an energy-efficient, flexible machine solution tailored for high-performance.

Improved added value with the EBLOW 37
The EBLOW 37 design has its roots in the hydraulic machine range. For the Berlin company however, the future is now also electric. The goal of the new innovation was to take the experience from the manufacture of the EBLOW electric packaging machine series and combine it with the advantages of the proven BA 34.2 hydraulic canister machine. The hydraulic BA 34.2 has been successfully positioned in the market with over 200 machines. Now BEKUM is transferring this to an electric generation of machines, which offer a technically and economically attractive solution for producing articles between 10 and 35 litres. Typically, this model is targeted toward canister manufacturers all over the world. According to BEKUM, the high-performance EBLOW 37 provides canister manufacturers with the option of upping their added value through increased output volumes.

The best of both worlds - an energy-saving system with fast closing pressure build-up
The EBLOW 37 follows the performance of the BA 34.2 without compromises. Here, BEKUM is relying on a new energy-saving system for the movements of the machine: Closing unit and mould closing function are electrically driven, while the closing pressure build-up for effective force transmission is achieved through servo hydraulics and is thus available quickly as usual. This hybrid principle makes use of the advantages from both types of drive technology.

Pure high performance: Up to 15% more output volume with 20 l canisters
With a closing force of 370 kN and a mould width of 700 mm, canister production is the domain of the EBLOW 37. According to BEKUM, the comparison measurements of the single-station machines are very promising. Compared to a conventional hydraulic solution, the EBLOW 37 enables production to be increased by up to 15%. This corresponds to an output volume of 240 pieces per hour based on a 20 l lightweight canister as reference item. These values recommend the EBLOW 37 as a new standard in its class.

High extrusion quality with high-tech spiral distributor blow heads
BEKUM provides its machines with spiral distributor blow heads, which feature excellent, uniform wall thickness distribution in the pre-form and the finished article. This results in significant potential for the operator to optimise the parison quality not only for single-layer products, but especially when it comes to products with a multi-layer structure. And there is no need for the customer to compromise on user-friendliness either: the heads can be easily set from the front of the machine. And not only that: the design of the head enables faster colour changes than standard design principles, which leads to a direct increase in machine productivity. Change material for cleaning is also reduced to a minimum. The compact construction of the spiral distributor heads is also impressive. Their smaller surfaces mean considerably less energy is required to heat them.

Flexible application expands the range of production
BEKUM’s many years of manufacturing know-how from the packaging sector has gone into the machine development of the EBLOW 37. The user can thus expect a high degree of flexibility. The setting of blow moulds with different mould thicknesses can be performed quickly and very conveniently thanks to a production-optimising automated calibration run. In combination with the company’s own specially designed and produced extrusion heads with spiral distributor technology, the EBLOW 37 also impresses on the material side. Many blow-mould materials made from HDPE and PP in single- and multi-layer designs (3-layer and 6-layer), including those with transparent strips and polycarbonate, can be processed with excellent results. The new design allows very fast colour changes for the highest level of flexibility and cost efficiency. Through the use of a characteristic BEKUM top or bottom calibration, the production range can be expanded even further. Many proven and process- safe options of the familiar BA 34.2 will also be available in the new EBLOW 37. The future is electric – including in the packaging.
