New MMS 2 is half the size of its predecessor, and its modular design enhances versatility; WIPOTEC also will showcase HC-A-V Checkweigher, combining precision checkweighing with dual camera inspection.
Roswell, GA – WIPOTEC Weighing Technology, a division that manufactures weigh cells utilizing (EMFR) electro-magnetic force technology for use in checkweighing, filling/dosing and packaging lines, will introduce the next generation of its Modular Multilane System at PACK EXPO Las Vegas, Booth #SL-6106, September 27-29, 2021. The new MMS 2 is 50% smaller than the previous model, and features a modular, plug in-and-out design that significantly enhances the unit’s flexibility.
The MMS 2 is an ideal weigh cell for production lines in a variety of settings, including quality control scenarios for vial and syringe filling and other scenarios necessitating customized inspection. Its space-saving design allows lane modules to be arranged side by side, and eliminates the need for an additional cabinet – a key benefit for machine manufacturers. The MMS 2 offers IP65 protection for safeguarding components against dust, foreign materials, water and other environmental factors.
All weigh cells of types SL-M-FS, SW-M-FS and SX-M-FS series can be used with the MMS 2. Like all WIPOTEC weigh cells, the MMS 2 utilizes high-tech Electro-Magnetic Force Restoration (EMFR) technology, a differentiating engineering design that guarantees precise weighing results. In addition, the MMS 2 can be combined with the company’s Active Vibration Compensation (AVC) technology in situations where weighing results and cycle rates may be adversely affected by surrounding vibrations or interference.
Also at Pack Expo, WIPOTEC-OCS will showcase its recently introduced HC-A-V Checkweigher, a quality control solution combining sophisticated checkweighing technology with premium visual inspection. Providing two critical functions in one compact frame, the unit is applicable for a broad array of consumer packaged goods, including food & beverage items.
The new quality assurance system adds high-resolution camera inspection to exceptionally exacting HC-A Checkweigher, building upon its precision checkweighing with a company-developed vision control system that checks items from both above and below. The result is a bevy of additional benefits, including cover film verification, sell-by date confirmation and 1D/2D barcode examination. Images of any rejected items are archived for reporting and troubleshooting.
The HC-A-V Checkweigher can handle up to 200 items per minute, and is as versatile as it is exacting: WIPOTEC-OCS can customize the machine’s various configurations – including weigh cell type, conveyor types/lengths/widths, product eject mechanism, and product handling – to meet unique customer and product requirements. For seamless product transport, the HC-A-V Checkweigher utilizes NT30 conveyor belts with knife edge and comfortable belt width. WIPOTEC-OCS servomotors ensure consistent speed, and digital light curtains provide reliable product identification.

Düsseldorf, August 03, 2021 - The development of the aluminum tubes and aerosol can market in the first half of 2021 can only be adequately assessed for the German market in retrospect to 2020 because the first quarter of 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis was still characterized by extremely lively demand from all end consumer markets.
Food and household sectors stable in the crisis, pharmaceuticals mixed, cosmetics weaker
In the course of the crisis, however, deliveries to the cosmetics market, which dominates in terms of volume, declined significantly due to mobility restrictions and temporary closures of hairdressing salons, beauty and care studios and duty-free shops in airports. The demand for deodorants and hair colours fell noticeably, with the hair colour segment weakening particularly in the first quarter of 2021.
Deliveries to the food and household sectors even went up significantly against the trend during this period. In contrast, demand from the pharmaceutical market was mixed because drug prescriptions went down due to the decline in doctor visits during the pandemic.
In view of these pandemic-related developments, the total decrease in deliveries in the industry which amounted to 7 percent in the first half of 2021 is still moderate.
Reliability of aluminum packaging manufacturers in difficult times
Customers' plans are still extremely short-term and volatile, which demands a high degree of flexibility in production planning from packaging manufacturers. The tube and aerosol can industry is worried about the still unusually high prices for raw materials such as aluminum, plastic, cardboard, wood, coatings, printing inks and for transport services, which have led to considerable cost increases in the industry.
"In some areas there has been a significant shortage of materials, which in some cases made cost-intensive stock-building in the packaging industry necessary in order to ensure the delivery reliability of this system-relevant industry," says Johannes Schick, chairman of GDA’s tubes, cans and extruded parts division. “In this way, out-of-stock situations could also be avoided for the customers of the tube and can manufacturers. As in the entire crisis, the packaging industry has delivered in the truest sense of the word and has distinguished itself as a reliable partner in the supply chain even under the most difficult market conditions,” added Schick.
Overall, the outlook for the industry for the rest of 2021 is cautiously optimistic, despite the spreading delta variant and a decreasing willingness to vaccinate. The brightening mood and confidence in the population should fuel consumption in the next few months, so that in 2021 at least the result of last year could be achieved.

Status affirms company’s ability to provide supreme customer service, minimize costs and maximize efficiencies for its customers.
amden, NJ – Rondo-Pak, a leading provider of quality folding cartons and printed components for the pharmaceutical, medical device and consumer industries, announces it has attained certified vendor status with Genentech, a member of the Roche Group. This designation comes as a result of Rondo-Pak providing dozens of consecutive batches of material, totaling eight-million cartons, without a single complaint or failure. As a preferred supplier, the status signifies Rondo-Pak’s consistent ability to provide supreme customer service, while minimizing cost and maximizing efficiency for its customers.
In Fall 2019, Rondo-Pak and Genentech’s Hillsboro Technical Operations (HTO) Facility launched an ambitious “Zero-Defect” initiative based on a shared vision for seamless delivery of secondary packaging material to the Genentech HTO manufacturing facility, home to a state-of-the-art fill/finish facility and warehousing and distribution center. From Rondo-Pak’s perspective the project represented an ideal opportunity to merge the goals associated with an active Continuous Improvement culture with Voice of the Customer (VOC) guidance and alignment with Genentech HTO.
Both companies formed project teams drawing on talent from the Business, Quality and Manufacturing segments of each organization to map out and execute a plan for a reduction in lead time, with a focus on providing Genentech HTO Incoming Inspection with 100% defect-free product. Over the course of nearly two years, each order manufactured by Rondo-Pak was subjected to rigorous inspection criteria established through the alignment on a well-defined Defect Library authored by both companies.
After the two-year long period with zero defects, the unique Certified Vendor status was granted, enabling Rondo-Pak materials to flow directly from Genentech HTO’s Receiving to Manufacturing with minimal quality control interaction.
“Our partnership with Rondo-Pak has been quite a success with significant recorded savings for incoming quality control, receiving and inspection since the project’s inception,” said Ronald McIntosh, Senior Manager Direct Material Procurement for Genentech HTO.
“We have been able to reduce our standard lead time from receipt of packaging materials through final packaging by nine days and reduce inventory for safety stock based on this shorter lead time. Improvement in both metrics contribute significantly to our bottom line.”
“At Rondo-Pak, it is our highest priority to be seen as a valuable partner in the pharmaceutical industry supply chain and we are proud to be considered one for Genentech,” said Bob Reilly, President & COO of Rondo-Pak. “Through our joint ‘Zero-Defect’ initiative, our company has equally benefited, realizing a reduction in waste, improved throughput, and full alignment with a key customer in the larger Roche family.”

Among other packing solutions, company to showcase HexcelWrap™ cushioning paper and simple, sustainable Mini Packing Station dispenser.
Bristol, CT – HexcelPack, a developer of eco-friendly, paper-based protective cushioning solutions to replace bubble wrap and other plastic or foam-based materials, will demonstrate its cost-effective, sustainable wrapping system for a wide array of product shipping needs at Pack Expo 2021, Booth SU-8425, September 27-29 in Las Vegas. Used by the United States’ top three retailers, the company’s HexcelWrap™ cushioning paper delivers unsurpassed product protection and packing simplicity for e-commerce, retail catalogue, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products, as well as third-party logistics (3PL) and contract packaging applications.
At the show, HexcelPack will allow visitors to “wrap for themselves” by utilizing the company’s Mini Packing Station™, a standalone and completely recyclable tabletop dispensing unit. The easy-to-use, human-powered dispenser requires no electricity, zero maintenance, and a mere fraction of the tabletop space required for competing solutions.
Utilizing groundbreaking slit paper technology, HexcelPack converts extensible paper into a three-dimensional, internationally patented cushioning product by making precise cuts at specific angles. This method makes the paper “flex,” expanding its volume while maximizing the strength and stiffness of its fibers. The result is a superior cushioning product proven to outperform environmentally-harmful product protection alternatives – including plastic-based bubble wraps and pillows.
In addition to its signature HexcelWrap™, HexcelPack also will showcase other products from its sustainable packing portfolio, including Hexcel’ope™, an eco-friendly alternative to bubble-lined shipping envelopes; HexaFil, a void fill solution ensuring packed items nestle together in a stable position, making them less likely to shift during transport; and Wrap Pad, designed to replace conventional tissue paper and tape used at retail locations to protect fragile items.
Available in both white and Kraft paper, benefits of HexcelWrap™ and the Mini Packing Station™ include:
Unsurpassed Product Protection: Engineered with Ultra Stretch™ technology, HexcelWrap™ delivers superior cushioning and product protection. Users simply stretch, wrap and tear the lightweight, interlocking material to custom lengths without the need for tape or scissors. HexcelWrap™ is ideal for shipping fragile items and reduces product damage by eliminating, among other adverse events, glass-on-glass contact during the supply chain journey.
Sustainability: Completely paper-based, HexcelWrap™ cushioning paper is made of 100% Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Canadian Paper for exemplary sustainability and little to no impact on the environment – all while delivering protection proven to outperform plastic bubble wraps and pillows. Unlike single-use plastic bubble wrap, the paper used to produce HexcelWrap™ is fully curbside recyclable and biodegradable.
Return On Investment: Especially considering the fully manual, electricity- and maintenance-free nature of the Mini Packing Station™ dispenser, using HexcelWrap™ is as impactful on the bottom line as it is on the environment. Protective and cost-effective, the system allows retailers to expediently recoup their investment.
