EU readies new law to cut packaging waste from e-commerce

The environmental impact of e-commerce has attracted scrutiny from EU policymakers concerned about the amount of packaging waste generated from growing online sales.

Brussels will seek to address this as part of a revision of its packaging and packaging waste directive, due on 30 November.

E-commerce in Europe grew by 13% to €718 billion in 2021, according to industry figures, confirming the sharp rise seen the year before during the COVID-19 pandemic when brick-and-mortar shops were forced to shut down for safety reasons.

EU set to adopt mandatory recycled content targets in new packaging law

The European Commission wants to reduce the environmental impact of packaging by mandating that producers use a minimum amount of recycled plastic in new packaging placed on the market.

Only 5% of plastic in packaging came from recycled sources in 2019, according to industry group Plastics Europe. And recyclers face an uphill battle to sell secondary materials in a market dominated by cheaper and higher-quality virgin supplies.

Italian researchers find new recipe to extend life of fresh pasta by a month

A new twist on packaging combined with a special ingredient could extend the shelf life of fresh pasta by a month, researchers have revealed.

Heat-treated, industrial fresh pasta has a shelf life of approximately 30-90 days, if stored appropriately. However, by taking a triple-pronged approach, involving new forms of packaging, a different packaging atmosphere, and the addition of “good” bacteria, researchers have been able to extend this to 120 days.

Princes reports 100% of its branded tuna was responsibly sourced in 2021

International food and drink group, Princes, has announced that it has achieved its long-standing ambition to responsibly source 100% of its branded tuna across the Group.  

In 2018 Princes announced its ambition to only purchase responsibly-sourced tuna for all its brands from fisheries that are either already MSC certified, engaged in a FIP (Fishery Improvement Project) that is working towards MSC certification, or from verified and well managed FAD Free or Pole and Line sources.
