'Stay hungry stay foolish' is the book by rashmi bansal that i just finished reading. Its the great inspiring story of iip ahmedabad gradyates who have made a difference being enterpreneurs. Since i also became an offical enterpreneur after leaving pepsico and so had been reading alot about enterpreneurs. When i heard about this book and their success stories, i was impressed and read the whole book. After reading the book i find that all the graduates had the gerat ides or thinking of doing something good, big and challenged the conventional thinking. But the fact is almost all of them became successful when they got real financial support, they used their iip network to connect. So to me it lloks that iip did impart the great analytical education so they did not fail but they had not been able to generate money from their ideas to sustain their ideas. They did need vc funding or angel funding or someone supporting them financially and then they knew how to widely use the money to prove the point. So now my question is that can we not succeed with iip education and with financial support? Www.packagingconnections.com is one such initiative that is trying to connect packaging decision makers acroos the globe and does not have any financial support.  I really do not find any vc in india who is looking forward to support good ideas but they are probably looking for safe bets, banks again are no real different. I do have my alumni iip's network but that is still developing and not quiyte like iims on the top. So what do you think we should do to make the www.packagingconnections.com a real packaging meeting point whe we have no money? Any inoovative idess????? 

Indian institute of packaging, new delhi centre organized a one day national seminar packaging for emerging markets at the claridges, new delhi. The seminar was the great success and new ideas were presented by india's leading packaging experts. Www.packagingconnections.com was the media partner to the seminar. The key note address by mr davinder singh: business head, cavinkare gave a good start and had built up lot of expectations fro the seminar.  He basically declared that packaging has been a game changer and he proved his point with live examples in india and worldwide which audience could related. Then there were many interesrting presentations on various packaging innovations for the emerging markets like my mr santanu chowdhury; associate director of ranbaxy labs ltd, a story of metal packaging by mr saket bhtia of rexam hindustan tin works where he nicely showed how metal is 1005 recyclable and what are the new trends for the emerging market. The show was attended by senior industry leaders and the various cross functions. It was great to see so many alumnus of indian institute of packaging. During the seminar, the current director of indian institute of packaging: prof n c saha also announced that indian institute of packaging is now working on b.tech & m.tech in packaging technology. Let us see how far and how fast he succeeds to get this moving as there had been many attempts in the last 25 years but nothing visible to the post graduate students of indian institute of packaging is seen till date. Its again the nice initiative and we at packagingconnections wish him good luck and full support. This is important for the better development of packaging for the emerging markets

Here is the picture of India's first qualified and trained post graduate packaging technologists. The picture is from  Packaging Digest published by Indian Institute of Packaging, Vol. 15, No. 2  January - March'88 . The first convocation happened at Hotel President, Mumbai and Master's Diploma was to the successful students of the first batch of the two year postgraduate programme in packaging technology. Prof. Ram Meghe, Hon'ble Minister of Education, Govt. of Maharashtra presented the diplomas. Do you remember the students here now? These are 22 years old pictures. This is the shot taken on 1st march 1988. 

I am #7 from left in the second standing row from the top. My name is Sandeep Kumar Goyal. You tell me more names whom you can recognise here? Of course, you can see our beloved Dr N G Mokashi quietly sitting at the right most corner in the front with Prof P G Deshmukh.

 I just lost my Nokia's Bluetooth while security check last night at the airport. Its a great thing for me to be handsfree and explain myself overphone without any extra stress of holding the phone on one hand or tilting my neck on one side. So I had to quickly needed to buy one more. I went to airport gadget shop Croma and bought the new bluetooth headset of Nokia.  I was surprised to see such a big package for such a small accessory. Then I looked around at the store and others were also not really different. The disturbing fact is that it says on the bottom line: "No Charger, less package, less waste"  We can see it uses oversized big card board and big blister. So it is wasting cardboard natural resources and also adding to plastic waste. It is also taking extra space on display and extra space on transportation so more carbon emission. Why we do that? Can these such big companies not think of smaller packages and truly help to reduce the packaging waste rather than saying No Charger, less package, less waste. If no additional thing in the same pack, of course it would have less packaging and then they would be using that packaging when they pack the charger. So why such a declaration?

 Interesting how shapes come alive. See the display picture at India Packaging Show 2010 in Hyderabad. Like many other lifestyle products, now packaging suppliers are also finding ways to promote packaging by connecting to real life. This really reflects the how good shrink label can promote packaging and continue to protect the product , maintaining the aesthetics.  I liked this communication, its really live. Any idea what does Tanvika mean?

Let us throw everything that we use today that came in some kind of packaging and then see how does it make any difference to our life? This is the idea I am getting from Packaging Matters!  Look at toiletries, razor blades, toothpaste, beverages, tissues, condoms, juices, colas, Pizza box  and then see how can we live without all that? Are there any better means of carrying that product? Everytime we hear that packaging is adding to the environment waste but parallely we also need to say how it is improving the society/ How it is helping to improve the jobs, improve the economy, feed the hungry at remote places, reducing the waste by way of increasing the shelf life etc. So let us try to give some reasons here everyday. First one I would like to put:

1. Packaging gets you the product that you need

 This is the common site in India when empty bulk pack containers are transported. Can we think of a bettr way to transport these? They simply transport air and burn energy. If these need to be recycled, may be companies can crush & compact them. This would also reduce their improper use like many a times such chemical containers are used to transport drinking water too. What do you say? This is the picture I took in Hyderabad. Thse are also quite dangerous for the safety on roads. And we do not want our packaging to cause accidents, do you?

I think fasion packaging is often ignored specially in india by organized companies. Fashion is everywhere but still those come from unorganised players most of the time. Recently I had been reading abook Tiya : A Parrot's Journey Home by Samarpan. This has been published by HarperCollins Indian in joint venture with India Today group. On page 133, I found an interesting read; The Donkeys on the Run and it says:

"What is there in a donkey's life? What is there in a donkey's life? We were greeted by this monomogue of a trotting donkey at the farm that we had reached. Donkeys are a peculiar breed, they can neither be led by a ring in their nose, nor can they be pulled by a rope round their neck. They can only be driven by a stick from behind, or led forward by their changing moods. Their obstinacy can only be matched with their stupidty, "

So what I find informative here that they can only be driven by a stick from behind . Sometimes that is what I feel is the situation of packaging projects in the company, they are like donkeys and everybody says what is their in packaging and then someone realises the importance and starts using the stick from the top so that projects move. So if we find that our packaging projects are being treated like donkeys then we must not forget that to drive them, we got to be tough and use the stick: means probably needs to push hard.

Recently I was at Prague airport waiting for my flight. While roaming, I noticed a poster. I do not know what does that mean but they have nicely changed the bum line seen from the slipping trousers into a smiley. This is the great way of using any situation positively. This is nothing but simple creativity. Here is the picture for you.

Its quite surprising that india is on sunshine of packaging industry but students of indian institute of packaging are still searching jobs. They have done two year full time post graduation course from this premier institute and are now helpless. Some of the students have even taken education loans. Some of them contacted me personally to help them. I did not know what to say as we at www.packagingconnections.com do not handle recruitment commercially.  This is what i saw recently readymade gole gappe popularly known in mumbai as paani puri. Earlier it was hard to find this indian moth watering snack readymade and one had to go to street side hawker most of the time. Sometimes, when you have foreign guests whom yu would like to try this but afraid of the hygiene, then these nicely packed gole gappe are a good idea. This is thanks to packaging technology and the comapny who thought of doing it. After seeing this, i could see that there are many more improvements that an experienced packaging technologist can do to it so that inside gole gappe are not broken and its easier to use them. But the concept is wonderful and a welcome idea, we should try snacks and make them global. It would be good for products and good for packaging.

 This is the new iip alumni website www.iipalumni.org earlier this was called www.iipalumni.com but now this has been migrated to www.iipalumni.org in much more simple & interactive version. The home page looks simply freshens you. There was a fund problem to support the website so www.packagingconnections.com came forward to develop & sponsor the site on their high speed servers.  For about six months, the site was down and interaction among alumnus was becoming difficult though various linkedin, facebook, orkut etc groups had been formed but nothing like their own very place. So this is up & running again with many more features. Iip alumnus can start registering now and they will then be activated by the administrators. For the security reasons and to stop outsiders to enter the alumni private network, its the two stage security. Two stage security is email verification and administrator approval. So if you are reading this blog and are iip  alumnus then please go on and register at www.iipalumni.org  please also inform as many iip alumnus as possible thorugh your own network.

This is the picture of upside down dustbins outside Patiala House, New Delhi. I think its near Gate#4 which is quite close to India Gate which probably teh cleanest public place in capital and Patiala House is the court complex where criminal cases are discussedto arrive at justice. Outside the gate, you see these two colored Green & Blue dustbins placed by New Delhi by concerned authrities. Now you can see how one can really use these dustbins as they are upside down and the very purpose of dustbins is lost. I had to mee a friend of mine for some legal matter and just passed through this site. i could not stop myself and took a picture. later, on way back, i was thinking that efforts by the government are not meeting the purpose and probablt these dustbins are not practical to handle to empty. They need to be locked below so that these do not turn upside down.

While thinking about it, I think we at packaging can offer a solution. The solution could be that collapsible & disposable biodegradable boxes are kept here. Those boxes can be picked up by the concerned team and replaced everyday by the new ones. So they do not have to deal with emptying them, They can just pick them, carry them and dump at the appropriate places nicely without worrying about dealing so much with the filth. Its the great job they do for the society, let us think of giving them some breather!

Its rather unfortunate that world's leading network of packaging is being attacked by some unscrupulous people and some visitors got adversely affected. But thanks to our strong technical team who monitors the activities round the clock and caught this immediately and started addressing the issues. The problem has been diagnosed, the solution has been found and now the implementation has started. Its a tedious process but we are on the job and should be out of the problem in next few hours. I read this somewhere and found to be absolutely true. In you age, we all want to make money and so don't care so much about health, start saving money. Later on when we are not that healthy, we withdraw from the same savings to take care of health. So be after money so much early in life, let us be after health also. Taking care of health while young is an investment and pays dividens in the older age. There is no insurance that can replace that dividend. So let us work on it. I try to go for walk everyday even when i get up late. It really refreshes me and i am sure you will be having your own physical activities to do refresh yourself.

Today i saw an interesting advertisement in the times of india about the ai to be declared airline partner for commonwealth games 2010. This is normal for any such important events that national carrier becomes the partner. Now my question is : can they really fulfill their responsibility or will they add to the problem. We regularly read about the games infrastructure running behind schedule but chief minister says not to worry things will happen. We read almost daily about the safety issues with the airline, crew fighting mid air and putting passengers in risk: its full of conflicts. In such cases, do you not think that they should have more than one partner?

The advertisement is quite colourful and looks good. Its like good packaging with terrible product: what do you say?
