All you need to know about the barrier packaging
Barrier packaging term refers to using barrier material to protect the elements of the stored item. It conceals the desirable elements of the stored product in a controlled atmosphere. These elements could be aroma, chemical substances, flavor or any such thing, which has its influence on the intended shelf life of the product.
Along with concealing the essential elements, barrier packaging prevents the stored product from moisture, contamination, light and pollution. This is the reason why this kind of packaging is being used in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food product industry.
In these industries, packaging directly influences the quality of stored product. Therefore, barrier packaging proves extremely beneficial, as it protects the product throughout the supply chain. This kind of packaging constrains a stored product from the harmful effects of the outer environment. It ensures the product’s safety and security until it reaches in the hands of the final customer.
Many products are sensitive to UV Rays, oxygen and moisture. Multiple layers of barrier packaging work as a shield to safeguard the product from these elements. It blocks the humidity and moisture, which results in extending the shelf life of the product.
Barrier packaging is light weight, easy to handle and occupies minimum space. Light weight helps to keep the shipping cost under control and facilitates easy transportation of the products. It is possible to maintain the basic value of the product with this packaging. Along with safeguarding from the contaminations, it maintains the cleanliness and freshness of the product.
Efficient distribution is another point where barrier packaging scores over the common packaging solutions. It protects the environment as these kinds of packaging solutions are reusable. Barrier packaging material holds the ability to be printed with a wide range of emblem, logos, and designs.
In today’s highly competitive and demanding market, manufacturers are compelled to adopt the latest packaging technology to meet the demands and requirements of the customers. Barrier packaging is the best option available to fulfill the customer’s ever growing demands without affecting the figures of the bottom line. Barrier packaging stratifies customers’ demands, does not pinch the bottom line, and at the same time, proves environment friendly.
Packaging is the crucial aspect of any business, because it has a major influence on the quality of the products. Quality of the product determines goodwill of the company. Good quality always leads to higher sales and vice versa. So, lagging behind the latest packaging technology can put a company’s position in the danger zone.
Barrier packaging is compatible with all kind of products. Today, more and more companies are showing interest in the barrier packaging. Packaging was and will always be a critical component of any business. As far as pharmaceutical products are concerned, packaging has always played a major role in establishing the company’s market position. Barrier packaging has emerged as an effective solution for all the packaging requirements as it is secure, convenient, cost effective, and environmentally friendly option available for packaging pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food products. It maintains the overall product stability throughout the supply chain.
Vegetable canning
Vacuum is employed to retard oxidative aerobic (or air loving) microorganisms.
Dried Foods:
"Instant" beverages such as coffee, freeze dried and vacuum dried foods contain very low levels of moisture in the range 1-3%.
Dried foods which contain only 1-3% moisture have erh values which are below 20% and may even be below 10%. As the humidity of ambient air is rarely in this low range, such foods absorb water vapour freely from the air surrounding them. These foods often have a porous nature and a high surface to weight ratio, thereby increasing the hygroscopicity uptake of water vapour may be so rapid that packaging is done in an air-condiioned room in which low RH is maintained. Some very low moisture dried foods are highly susceptible to oxidative deterioration, so they must be packaged in container which are impermeable to water vapor and to oxygen. Hermetically sealed jars, lever lid cans and heat-sealable multiwall laminates witha foil layer are generally used. They are often packed initially under vacuum or in an inert gas. Many like "instant" coffee, must be packed in resealable containers. These products are relatively expensive and can toletae expensive packaging. If they are inadequately packaged, they cake and will not reconstitute, and can also lose much of their volatile flavouring components. In package desiccants, or oxygen scavangers are sometimes sealed in with dried foods which are susceptible to deterioriation caused by minor changes in moisture or oxygen level. The packages for these scavangers must transmit gases and vapours but be sift-proof to avoid contaminating the food.

Goal of increasing throughput while eliminating packaging breakage
After experiencing a higher than desirable level of bottle breakage with repurposed packaging equipment, Midwestern stalwart Boulevard Brewing Company approached Standard-Knapp to create a solution to meet its non-traditional packaging demands, which include four different bottle types, multiple packaging sizes, and no carton dividers. The packaging company responded with an innovative solution that picks the product from the infeed conveyor and gently places it into the bottom of the empty case. The company now reports virtually zero packaging breakage and has increased throughput by about 10 percent because of increased efficiency and less down time.
Boulevard Brewery’s growth fuels facility expansion
Kansas City, MO-based Boulevard Brewing Company is the 10th largest craft and 17th largest overall brewery in the U.S. Boulevard. It currently offers seven year-round and five seasonal brews, as well as a rotating line of artisanal beers named for its iconic brick smokestack, packaged in 750ml bottles, 12-ounce four-packs, and kegs.
During 1990, the first full year of production, the company sold 1,747 barrels (bbls) of beer. By 2011, the company had sold the equivalent of more than 46 million 12-ounce servings and is aiming on brewing about 188,000 bbls in 2013. With growth like that, it’s not surprising that the brewery reached capacity. In 2005, Boulevard broke ground on a 70,000 square foot expansion, and now has a total brewing capacity of 600,000 bbls.
Along with the new facility, Boulevard needed to invest in a packaging line that could keep up with its phenomenal growth. As Boulevard director of engineering Mike Utz explains, Boulevard began working on a high-speed packaging line in 2008, after the facility expansion was completed. “We opted to go with repurposed and reconditioned equipment for the new line, which included a drop packer.” Boulevard eventually selected used equipment from Standard-Knapp, a Portland, CT-based manufacturer of packaging machinery.
Boulevard had the unit, a 939S Versatron, rebuilt and converted to its product range. Here’s where things got tricky. While the equipment met Boulevard’s need for speed, it came with a price – a high bottle breakage rate during packaging that was exacerbated by the lighter weight bottles that are becoming the industry norm. According to Utz, the trend towards use of light weight glass bottles saves on money and materials, but makes the bottles weaker and less able to stand up to rugged drop packing. Also, the company uses dividerless packaging for a number of package sizes (6, 12, and 20 packs) so the packer had to hit perfectly because there were no separators.
According to Utz, “We wanted to stick with the traditional packaging that was part of our image, but the glass on glass packaging led to an unacceptable breakage rate.”
New Pic-N-Place packaging module virtually eliminates all packaging breakage
Standard-Knapp worked closely with Boulevard to find a solution to the breakage issue. Brian Stearns, mechanical engineer for Standard-Knapp, explains, “The used drop packer Boulevard Brewing originally purchased was developed for a different purpose and more for a company at a different stage in its development. It was not well suited for their capacity and their need for different bottle and case types, which is why they experienced breakage.”
The solution Boulevard arrived at involved retrofitting the 939S Versatron case packer with a brand new upgrade, called the Pic-N-Place module, which picks the product from the infeed conveyor and gently places it into the bottom of the empty case. It gave Boulevard soft container handling and is engineered to grab product in the optimum, most secure position or spot. The module virtually eliminated packaging breakage.
The 2-axis servo controlled Pic-N-Place acts just like a person’s arms, offering smooth operation. The system is easy to program and easy to maintain consistent operation. The PLC configurable placement profiles make it easy to configure gripping action, and the distance that the product travels into the case is easily set from the operator interface.
Standard Knapp’s 939S Versatron™ case packer with Pic-N-Place module |
The Pic-N-Place’s heavy duty construction includes mechanical grippers with long life and high uptime is engineered to run 24/7. It packs every last bottle, and no human assistance is needed to complete the process.
The Pic-N-Place was initially developed for increasing speed in lowering head applications but was later considered an option that would work well for dealing with the trend toward lighter glass and partitionless packaging. Stearns explains that the industry is moving in the direction of reducing packaging materials, so everyone is going towards thinner glass and partitionless cartons. “You need extremely versatile equipment to be able to handle all those different bottle types and do it all at high speeds.” Installing the new unit at Boulevard was a win-win for both companies – Boulevard instantly solved its packaging breakage problem and Standard Knapp confirmed that Pic-N-Place’s is the perfect option for partitionless packaging.
The new module was installed quickly and easily at the end of 2012, over the long holiday weekend. After a bit of testing that included hand-placing bottles to check out carton size, Boulevard began with a 4-hour shift the first day, and moved to 100 percent production by the following day. The quick commissioning and optimization schedule was helped by the fact that workers were already familiar with the machine and only had to make a very small change to go from drop-packing to the Pic-N-Place module.
“We now have just about zero breakage at the packaging step,” says Boulevard’s Utz, who notes that they set production records during the second week of operation, increasing throughput by about 10 percent. “We sent more finished cases down to our palletizer than ever before. The machine is not faster, but the efficiency is much greater and there is less down time, less disruption to the flow of beer, and more packages.”
He notes that before the module was installed, workers were faced with frequent shutdowns, and had to stop the line to clean out the packer and start it up again. They also had been faced with contamination further down the line. “Standard-Knapp worked with us to resolve the problems and provided an engineered solution that could fit into the existing footprint, which was important, since the packaging line is shoe-horned into the space and we did not have a lot of extra space,” says Utz.
He adds that he was very pleased with the engineering of the equipment. “Retrofitting the new system to the existing machine was done very well. This was a novel concept in the packaging industry, and I was impressed with their commitment to making it work and the quality of the solution once delivered. This solution allowed us to keep our packaging the way it was, which was an important benefit for Boulevard.”
Since its installation at Boulevard Brewing Company, several other brewers have visited the site to watch it in action. “Everyone who lays their eyes on it is excited and can’t wait to get their hands on it,” says Stearns.

Based in the UK, Campden BRI provide the food and drinks industry worldwide with the research, technical and advisory services essential to ensure product quality and safety, process efficiency and innovation.
The research centre is a continuous source of knowledge for industry, meeting frequently with its thirteen member interest groups and associated industrial working parties. Contract research and development is also carried out on behalf of UK government departments, levy boards, industrial consortia and the European Union.
At Campden’s R&D facilities in Gloucestershire there are three fully equipped food processing halls, product and process development areas, a state-of-the-art sensory analysis suite, and extensive research and analytical laboratories.
As part of their research for the food and drinks industry, Campden BRI offer package testing for clients who are looking at reducing packaging costs whilst maintaining packaging performance. They were recently asked to assess whether the additional ethylene vinyl alcohol layer (EVOH) was benefitting the moisture barrier properties of board pots. In order to determine the moisture barrier levels of the pots, the water transmission rate was measured using a permeation analyser. They tested the pots with the ethylene vinyl alcohol layer and then without this layer. In this instance, the water vapour transmission rates (WVTR) weren’t adversely affected by removing the EVOH – so the layer wasn’t adding any significant benefit to the moisture barrier quality of the pots.
Campden BRI used the Systech 7001 Water Vapour Permeation Analyser to test the WVTR of the board pots. For reliable water vapour analysis, this permeation analyser offers a quick response and consistently accurate measurements, with precision temperature and humidity flow control and a P2O5 sensor for absolute moisture.
Lynerric Potter, Senior Research Officer at Campden BRI says, “Water vapour and oxygen transmission are just two of the tests we offer, using a suite of instrumental analysis systems which we can also use to assess physical properties, such as tensile strength and internal pressure resistance, leak detection and seal integrity. Instruments like the Permeation Analyser are an important part of our tool-kit.”
At Campden BRI laboratory testing facilities they also use the 8001 oxygen permeation analyser and Gaspace Advance headspace gas analyser from Systech Illinois.

This recent notification by Himachal Pradesh High Court directing the state government to ban the sale, storage, entry and manufacture of non-essential food items packaged in non-biodegradable material in the state by January 26 will prove havoc for the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) segment. The list of food items includes chips, chocolates, biscuits, ‘namkeen’, noodles, Ice Creams and beverages.
A division bench of Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice VK Sharma last Thursday directed the government to ensure edible oils and fats are not sold in plastic bottles and pouches, but rather packed in tin containers. The ban excludes drinking water, both packed and mineral
In its January 10 order, court had said — “We are not in any manner issuing directions that such items are banned because that is not within the purview of the court but if we follow the Himachal Pradesh Non-Biodegradable (Control) Act of 1995, the least we can do is to direct that these harmful items should be sold only in bio-degradable packing.” It said such packing might increase cost of products, “but it would be worth paying that extra money to protect environment and health of the children”.
Major stakeholders affected by this ban are preparing to move the Supreme Court but in the meantime it will be an uphill task for the state government to implement the orders. When asked RK Aggarwal, Vice President (North Zone) of The All India Plastics Manufacturers’ Association (AIPMA) whether in fact going the bio-degradable way is in fact the future, he replied by saying that a ban is not a solution. He added, “For a common man, the term bio-degradability has a lot of ambiguity around it. Authorities need to first define the specifications of bio-degradability. Moreover, at present commercial availability of bio-degradable resins is not available in the country.”
KP Mohandas, secretary general of IBMA, said the court order is clearly against the interest of consumers, industry and trade. “We have been consulting the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) about introducing bio-degradable packaging. The director told us clearly that no such technology is available in the country for biodegradable packaging of mass food products such as biscuits. We are very disappointed with the order,” he said.
This ban might also imply then that brands need to have separate packaging for products that are retailed in the state of Himachal Pradesh, which is not a viable case. The state government is waiting to receive court orders and directives after which the ban will be implemented. “I believe regulating this ban will be an uphill task. Moreover, it might also affect tourism in the state to a certain extent. Instead of banning items, the government should really be working at fine-tuning the collection and sorting of post-consumer waste,” said Aggarwal.
…………………………………………………
Now being packaging professionals our concern is why it’s always plastics that is targeted and blamed for all environment hazards that happen?? Isn’t it better if govt comes up with guidelines and better procedures to collect waste and further recycles it? There are associations, NGOs who make beautiful products out of recycled plastics, laminates and waste – why not promote these and support the industry.
Secondly if they are banning plastics for snack foods, what options do they have for industry – should be simply ban these products since alone neither paper nor metal packaging is a solutions for these products
Hope this information helps you in some of your decisions, we do look forward to your inputs and discussions here,
Thank you,

Hello Packaging Friends
Recently while doing some online research, I happen to come across an interesting discussion on a study done by ‘Chemnitz University of Technology’ to understand difficulties faced by senior citizens when it comes to opening various types of packaging.
In the study, senior citizens of both sexes aged from 57 to 77 were invited in the test. Without any time limit, they were asked to open a total of 35 different types of product packaging varying from medication to foodstuffs to cosmetics.
Results were an eye opener that shows failing strength of elderly people in terms of motor functions and vision, leading to difficulty in opening majority of the packs – cardboard boxes, cartons, plastic bags, flexible pouches and so on.
To understand the scenario for Indian / Global companies on how critical they think about this issue, we conducted a survey wherein packaging professionals across the globe have participated and the results we got were quite surprising.
Many people think senior friendly feature is important for pharma sector mainly but is this actual scenario? In modern world where joint family’s system is slowly diminishing, elderly people are staying away from their children and hence has to handle all household chores on their own. This involves dealing with every kind of product packaging from food stuffs, laundry detergents, floor cleaner, pesticides, equipment and appliances and so on. This gives a valid reason to consider senior friendly feature all kind of products/consumer goods industry.
All companies dealing with FMCG products should have this as a critical feature but result shows only 56% companies agrees considering this while designing a pack. Few companies consider implementing senior friendly feature mainly due to regulatory requirements or company policies, not because this gives value addition to consumers.
Another interesting analysis that came from the survey is “labelling”. Many think that this is not a parameter to make a pack senior friendly but actually this is one of the critical parameters. Clear labels in terms of instruction on usage, opening, nutrition, serving etc also defines a senior convenience feature for a pack
Another outcome of the survey shows lack of awareness on various options in making a pack senior friendly and innovations in packaging.
The detailed analysis and data can be downloaded in form of the report - http://www.packagingconnections.com/sites/default/files/senior_friendly_packaging_report.pdf
We look forward to your valuable inputs on the same to understand the scenario in micro aspects as well.
Thanks

Guar gum has emerged as India's top farm export. India brings approx $4.9 billion from its exports. India accounts nearly 80% of global production. It is mainly grown in Rajasthan and Haryana. This is mainly used as controlling agent in oil wells for easy drilling. It is also used in textiles, food and cosmetics industries.
This is the brighter side. This is mainly exported in IBCs and lot of times, there is a problem of moisture increase. There are apparently no ready solutions. So there is a great scope of offering some nice moisture resistant bulk packaging. If anybody has any ideas, kindly update here.
