The interplay of shape and print offers a fantastic new look and the colouring of the rest of the can is a real eye catcher. A great concept that combines brand presence and brand protection perfectly.

A can from German manufacturer Tubex that goes under the name ‘PURITY’ was the winner in the prototypes category. The name is the concept and the can is a true innovation. With this can, Tubex was presenting nothing less than the first aluminium aerosol can without the lacquering that such cans have always needed previously inside and outside for the shaping process, even for non-critical contents. The manufacturing process has been altered in such a way that it is now possible to completely forego this lacquering. According to the manufacturer, it was even possible at the same time to further optimise some of the can’s mechanical properties, such as a higher burst pressure. PURITY thus represents an almost revolutionary overall concept: no internal or external lacquering any more, and thus significantly improved cost economy, shorter production processes and therefore smaller investments in machinery as well, a reduced ecological footprint due to less energy consumption and lower CO 2 emissions, and improved mechanical product standards.

The quality of the entries and the result of the competition impressed AEROBAL Secretary General Gregor Spengler. “The entries have documented once again the imaginativeness and the innovative spirit of the aluminium aerosol can industry. I’m pleased that a convincing proposal to solve the problem of product piracy was declared the winner. It is evidence that our members can make a constructive contribution to one of the major problems facing international brand manufacturers.

“And it is remarkable that the prototype category was won by an aluminium aerosol can that can be produced without lacquering on either the inside or the outside. For customers, sustainability is currently right at the top of the agenda. In this respect this packaging solution can contribute to improving both the environmental performance and the cost effectiveness of the aluminium aerosol can.”

Unchallenged leader on the local market and the country’s sole supplier to the major beverage players, Khoshform has chosen Sacmi technology on account of its quality, performance and a flexibility that permits the use of different mould types.

The Sacmi Group’s expansion on the international PET market is gaining speed fast. The latest firm to invest in the IPS 400 (injection preform moulding) - Sacmi’s innovative high-performance solution for the manufacture of PET preforms using injection technology – is Iranian firm Khoshform, easily the country’s biggest preform producer and exclusive supplier to the biggest international beverage players such as Coca-Cola.

The reasons behind this decision to invest in Sacmi technology – made following the customer’s detailed comparative analysis of the different solutions on the market - lie in the quality, performance and flexibility of the IPS 400.

Available in the 96 - 128 cavity range, the IPS 400 stands out, on one hand, because of important design innovations that ensure the very best preform quality (e.g. unloading operations occur directly on containers placed in the post-cooling area, thus simplifying the plant and reducing any risk of contamination) while, on the other, the outstanding ergonomics and user-friendliness already seen on the previous IPS 220 version have been combined with innovative flexibility.

The latter includes the compatibility of the IPS 400 with existing competitor-made moulds. This provides strategic added value at the investment stage, offering a plant engineering adaptability that has certainly not escaped the notice of Khoshform, the unrivalled local market leader thanks to its two production plants and 17 solutions for the high-speed manufacture of preforms. Signed last April, this latest supply contract will see the new Sacmi system installed at the Mashad facility by the end of 2016.

A pivotal beverage industry player for 15 years, for some time now Khoshform has been witnessing the fast growth of both the internal market and the area-wide export potential. Hence the decision to invest in the new IPS 400, a solution developed by Sacmi to meet the specific needs of converters – via high performance, quality, user-friendliness and flexibility – that can, on request, be supplied with a full complement of ultra-high speed quality control systems (such as the PVS, or preform vision system, capable of inspecting up to 50,000 preforms an hour).

Paperboard manufacturer Iggesund Paperboard’s market-leading brands Invercote and Incada are again among the three most valuable brands on the European paperboard market, concludes a newly released brand survey of European paperboard converters and brand owners done by Opticom International Research.

The converters chose Invercote as the clear leader, significantly ahead of number two, Performa from Stora Enso. Incada placed third among the 14 brands that qualified for the list of European leaders, according to the converters. Value for money and quality consistency are the most important factors for converters’ choice of paperboard. Their highest service priorities are availability and delivery reliability.

“We rarely comment negatively about Incada’s quality and we always receive excellent technical service,” said a UK converter specialising in cosmetics and other beauty products. “Invercote has been our main paperboard choice for many years and it functions well in our production,” said another UK converter with a more general focus.

AMI, Bristol, 7th September 2016 - Applied Market Information has unveiled the programme for the 11th European edition of its Thin Wall Packaging conference. Fast Respiration Meter from Perfotec was used to determine the Rate of Respiration under the Supply Chain temperature of 10° C and the transmission determined to maintain ideal Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide inside the liner bags to maintain Freshness and extend Shelf life.

“Trials were conducted with 60*40 Flexfresh™ Liner Bags in open top corrugated boxes. Product was packed in semi ripe condition in warm condition in the liner bags and were hermetically closed and moved to the Cold Store. By using Flexfresh™ Liner Bags the product remains dry and registers a very low weight loss, due to the hydrated environment inside the bag. Flexfresh™ does not allow condensation due to its unique proprietary formulation giving a major relief to exporters against Bacterial and Fungal infections. With the Biodegradability of the Liner Bag, it is a perfect sustainable solution,” explained N. Siva Shankaran Vice President - Flexfresh™ at Uflex.

Explaining the results, Mr. Ashok Chaturvedi, Chairman and Managing Director, Uflex Ltd., said that the major benefit of using the Flexfresh™ Liner bags is the possibility of having an elevated Carbon Dioxide level which prevented yellowing of the fruit and maintained firmness to the fruit quality. The European Tube Manufacturers Association, etma, chose the winners of its annual Tube of the Year competition during this year’s annual meeting of its members at the end of June in Vienna. A competent jury of experts from the association’s member companies judged the entries and selected winners in the categories aluminium, plastic, laminate and prototype tubes.

A range from Italian tubemaker La Metallurgica was chosen as the Aluminium Tube of the Year 2017. The tube is used for a spread cheese in different flavours: chili, paprika and pepper. The superbly printed photos and the excellent design promise a veritable explosion of flavours and create a desire for indulgence. A novel and revolutionary technology used during the digital printing, the DigIT system, makes the abundance of colours with its excellently depicted product promise possible. Together with the tone-in-tone cap, it gives the attractive and eye-catching aluminium tube a truly powerful look that appeals to the senses at the point of sale.

The winning tube in the Plastic Tube category scored with its appearance, which is no less impressive, and its outstandingly well implemented design, which is harmonious and technically convincing. The tube is produced by German manufacturer Tubex Wasungen for Schwarzkopf’s BC Fibre Force range. At first glance, the tube appears to be a classic plastic tube with a timeless design: elegant, simple and beautiful. In reality, the tube incorporates a wealth of first-class technical capabilities: the very fine and extremely gentle gradation on the translucent tube body is offset printed. This allows perfect covering power to be achieved at the end of the tube. In contrast, the translucency at the top end of the tube makes it possible to see the high-grade contents. The lettering is obtained by silkscreen printing to produce an appealing haptic and visual contrast to the softly shimmering substrate. Splendid hot-foil embossing adds an additional touch of luxury, perfectly complemented by the colour-coordinated metallic screw closure. A fascinating performance for the world of professional hair care.

The winner in the Laminate Tube category was from the world of veterinary medicine. Here, Hoffmann Neopac AG of Switzerland provided an impressive solution for its client, MSD Animal Health. To treat cats and dogs with an ointment, the client was looking for a pack that guaranteed the sterility of the contents, was suitable for a shelf-life of up to 24 months, allowed precise dispensing while being ergonomic to handle and was geared to the very small fill quantities specifically required.

The Twist´n´use Polyfoil tube from Hoffmann Neopac meets these criteria perfectly, especially as after practical tests the standard closure could be optimised still further in close cooperation with the client’s package engineering department. The result is a closure with four wings for considerably easier opening of the delicate tubes, which are available in six different sizes, with fill quantities from 0.4 to 5 ml. The new ergonomic design of the cap passed every consumer test with flying colours and following its successful commercial launch in Europe in the autumn of 2016 and in North America in the spring of 2017 it is certainly a successful example of user-oriented cooperation between producer and client to the benefit of the consumer.

Swiss manufacturer Hoffmann Neopac was also successful in the Prototypes category. Its new Stylo tube was specially developed for liquid and semi-solid products that need to be applied very precisely at a very specific point. For this, the Swiss company offers three different applicators: the Stylo Liner for extremely precise application, the Stylo Pipette with a Dropstop function for accurate dispensing, and the Stylo Bristle for a soft and gentle massage. Contents are only released once the on/off ring is turned. The consumer can understand intuitively how to handle it; the handling is also demonstrated using an embossed arrow pictogram. A transparent cone-shaped cap protects the applicator.

etma’s Secretary General Gregor Spengler is pleased with the results of this year’s competition. “Year in and year out our competition demonstrates the capabilities and innovativeness of the European tube industry. At the same time, trends and developments that will ensure the continued success of the tube ─ a proven yet nonetheless modern form of packaging ─ become apparent.
