FDA changes Plan B packaging to clarify that it is not an abortion pill

  • The Food and Drug Administration is changing the informational packaging of the emergency contraceptive pill, Plan B One-Step, to clarify that it is not an abortion pill.
  • Plan B works by stopping or delaying the release of an egg from the ovary, not by causing an abortion, the agency said.
  • It is an over-the-counter drug that can be taken as a backup method of birth control to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex.

IIT Roorkee develops printable edible ink for food safety

Researchers at the department of paper technology at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-R) have developed a water-based edible ink from plants for printing and packaging applications.

At the department of paper technology, researchers Kirtitaj K Gaikwad and Lokam Hakim have developed a substitute for synthetic ink, which is fully environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and suitable for different packaging and printing applications. The edible ink is manufactured from 100 percent plant-based material, 'catechu', without the use of any chemicals.

CJ Biomaterials creates cosmetic packaging for CJ Olive Young

CJ Biomaterials, a division of South Korea-based CJ CheilJedang, has created a new packaging solution CJ Olive Young’s cosmetic products.

Olive Young applies the 100% bio-sourced solution on the entire exterior of its WAKEMAKE brand container.

The ‘WAKEMAKE Water Velvet Vegan Cushion’ with eco-friendly bio-based packaging was launched on 21 December 2022 in Korea.

CJ Biomaterials, which specialises in producing polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), blends its amorphous PHA technology with polylactic acid (PLA) for the new cosmetic case.

New EU plastic waste ban could mark the end of miniature hotel toiletries

The proposal is part of the European Green Deal, an EU-wide plan to reach net zero by 2050, separate economic growth from resource use, and promote a circular economy.

In Europe, each person generates almost 180 kg of packaging waste on average every year. Packaging is one of the main culprits, accounting for 40 per cent of plastics and 50 per cent of paper used in the EU.

Unless action is taken, plastic packaging waste could rise by 46 per cent by 2030, according to the European Commission.
