Wolfertschwenden, 18 March 2021 – Mid April sees the start of the second round of events, focusing on all aspects of food processing and packaging, as part of the MULTIVAC Summit 2021. On the agenda are once again two groups of topics: "Expertise in lines and automation in the protein sector" and "Packaging solutions for fresh produce and convenience products". All interested customers and representatives from the food industry will initially be able to learn "virtually" (from 12 April), and later (from 26 April) in corona-compliant face-to-face events, about all aspects of current developments and future trends. Further information, as well as the opportunity to register, can be found at: https://link.multivac.com/summit/2021
As with the first sequence of events in March, the technical presentations and individual discussions with experts, as well as the practical live demonstrations, will take place in either the morning or afternoon, initially as "virtual" live sessions. Both groups of topics can be combined with each other. The location for the face-to-face events (from 26 April) is once again the new Application Center or the Training & Innovation Center at the Group's headquarters in Wolfertschwenden. From May onwards, the contents of these sessions will also be available on the MULTIVAC City platform.
1. Expertise in lines and automation: Proteins
The focus of this event is primarily on the efficient processing and packaging of proteins. MULTIVAC will be using the example of a fully automatic line for the slicing and packaging of processed cheese to demonstrate its comprehensive expertise in automation, and this complete line will be shown in live operation. The high-output S 1600 slicer, which sets the benchmark in the market with its innovative slicing technology and high level of precision, is just one of the very efficient components of the line.
The MULTIVAC Centrifuge Feeder for the automatic loading of sausages will also be presented. It ensures that straight or even slightly curved sausages are aligned to the optimum degree, so that they can be easily picked up by a robot and placed in the pack cavities.
MULTIVAC, as the complete packaging expert, will also be providing information about innovative solutions for reliable labelling and marking, as well as label and print inspection of the packs. The focus will be on cross web labelling and direct web printing.
MULTIVAC Line Control will also demonstrate the benefits, which a central, overarching line control can offer in the increasingly complex production and packaging process. Thanks to this centralised control of the line, all the line modules can be managed simply and reliably, ensuring that an efficient product flow is achieved.
2. Solutions for fresh produce and convenience products
The focus in this second topic is on the packaging of fruit, vegetables and convenience products. How can the shelf life of delicate products be extended? How can the consumption of packaging material be reduced? Which sustainable packaging concepts does MULTIVAC offer specifically for these products? And how can pots and cylindrical or shaped bottles be labelled flexibly and efficiently? These and other questions will be answered in presentations and live demonstrations in the Training & Innovation Center.
3. Additional topics for both groups
One topic with special relevance for virtually all companies is digitalisation. The expert contributors will use their presentations to explain, why digital solutions are of such value - particularly at the current time. The focus will be directed not only on current developments in the market, but also on the range of digital products from MULTIVAC. In addition to the myMULTIVAC customer portal, there is also a range of MULTIVAC Smart Services available to customers, and these make a major contribution to a high level of efficiency, machine availability and process reliability. The program will be rounded off with information about after-sales support, as well as with "Meet the experts" discussions, which offer customers the opportunity of discussing their individual questions with the specialists from the Innovation Center.
Outlook
The series of events will be continued in the coming months with "Solutions for the meat processing industry" (TVI), "Solutions for small and medium-sized companies or businesses producing hand-crafted products", as well as "Solutions for bakery companies" (FRITSCH).

Mondi Gronau in Germany has started up new lines to produce medical grade face masks and melt-blown nonwoven fabric, one of the crucial components for medical face mask production
The fully automated high-speed machines allow production of 700 masks per minute and more than one million face masks per day
All critical components are manufactured on site
The face masks are certified as a medical product to mitigate the spread of COVID-19
17 March 2021 – Mondi, global leader in packaging and paper, has started up new production lines for melt-blown nonwoven fabric and medical face masks at its site in Gronau, Germany to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
Mondi Gronau has over 50 years of experience in the production and processing of films, nonwovens and elastic components for hygiene products. Last year Mondi announced it would start up production lines to produce both the important base material, melt-blown nonwoven fabric, as well as the medical face mask themselves. With the new lines, Mondi is building up a local value chain in Germany to address the needs of the pandemic. The fully integrated production with two highly automated high-speed machines allows the output of 700 high-quality medical face masks per minute. This is approximately seven times higher than the standard face mask production line and will produce at least one million medical grade masks a day.
The masks are certified as a medical product by the German Johner Institute as well as meeting the German standards OEKO-TEX and Dermatest. With this production, Mondi Gronau will be directly addressing the needs of the German health sector including hospitals, pharmacies and specialised medical retailers.
“We identified the shortage in melt-blown nonwoven fabric in Germany early on in the pandemic last year and reacted swiftly to set up the production of high-quality medical face masks. With our high-speed production set-up and certifications in place, Mondi Gronau is ideally positioned to supply high-quality medical masks that offer reliable protection and high comfort from the moment they are put on to when they are taken off,” says Jürgen Schneider, Managing Director Mondi Gronau.

Sidel packaging team in Shanghai, China redesigned the package of Menton flavoured water by integrating youthfulness into its health attribute. The straight-wall lightweight PET bottle, which weighs only 17.85 grams for the 500 ml format, conveys the sense of modernity and is a statement of sustainable packaging. Targeting young consumers in China, this new design differentiates Menton as a premium choice among other Ready-to-Drink (RTD) flavoured water brands in the market.
Menton is a RTD product sold in convenience stores and markets around schools in medium-sized cities in China. After three years of rapid sales, Menton flavoured water faced growing competition in the market with similar packages and prices. Considering that Menton’s customers are price-sensitive young people who have grown up together with the development of China’s advanced internet culture, the brand decided to restyle the brand personality and resonate with them by repositioning the drink as a higher value product. To do so, they trusted in their long-term partner Sidel to develop a new packaging design from a concept to the industrial realisation of the product, which is also, but not only being produced on three Sidel Aseptic Combi Predis™ PET packaging lines at a very fast output of 60,000 bottles per hour (bph) per line.
Drink that brings to a Mediterranean holiday
Sidel’s team conjured up a completely new bottle concept, including iconic bottle shape and label designs. As Menton flavoured water is available with multiple fruity flavours, the inspiration of the new look was one of the ingredients – lemons – that are harvested in Europe. As a result, an association with the ideal, sunny Mediterranean holiday was applied to the new design with the help of a bright and jaunty colour pallet: the unique metallic “Tiffany blue” colour gives an exquisite brand image and unifies the different flavours, but the illustrated fruit pattern with its lighthearted, funny and relaxing mood conveys the healthy and natural attributes of the drink.
Sleek design combines strong capability
The challenge for Sidel was how to premiumise Menton and retain its health attribute in the new high valued soft drink category, because many soft drinks give the impression of containing high in sugar and unhealthiness. It is also crucial to build a stronger brand image and further improve the relationship between brand and consumers to increase the loyalty.
“Following the overall packaging design trend in China, we decided to create something more contemporary for young people who are the main target audience for the drink, moving away from complex and technical design structures. Therefore, we came up with a straight-wall lightweight PET bottle, which weighs only 17.85 grams for the 500 ml format and is unusual for premium packaging,” explains Steven Xie, Packaging Director from Sidel Greater China. The production process of the re-styled bottle is also more sustainable, reducing material and energy consumption due to its light weight. The new bottle also achieved performance requirements for transportation and storage.
Based on customer’s insights, specifications, supply chain conditions and product goals, Sidel supported from packaging conceptual graphic design and technical design to label design. In addition, Sidel provided all feasibility studies and performance tests, including dimensional and mechanical tests for thickness and weight. Within this project packaging experts also supplied three series of moulds and supported the industrial production to ensure that the bottles were performing across the supply chain according to initial specifications.
Since the product launch on the market in May 2020 and its recognition by packaging design experts with the “A’Design Award” in 2019-2020, it has already received positive feedback from its target audience.

CEFLEX and partners PCEP, Petcore Europe, Styrenics Circular Solutions and MORE Recycling team up to understand the reality of today’s collected household packaging waste – a vital step forward towards a circular economy for packaging materials.
Hailed as Europe’s first in-depth analysis of its kind, the resulting data aims to reveal the amounts and types of post-consumer flexible and rigid plastic packaging, in the two main waste streams in which it is collected. Sharing the findings of the study is expected to define and deliver a circular economy for all packaging materials.
The amount of how much packaging is placed on the market is only half of the story. So, a better analysis of packaging used by consumers and collected through waste streams is needed. This will help to define and accelerate development of the required infrastructure, systems and end market applications, which are required to enable progress in delivering a circular economy.
The study has been initiated by CEFLEX (Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging) in collaboration with the other key partners in the plastic packaging value chain – Polyolefin Circular Economy Platform (PCEP), Petcore Europe, Styrenics Circular Solutions and MORE Recycling. It covers all types of consumer packaging found in today’s households – everything from wrappers, bags and pouches to bottles, trays and tubes - across key European markets.
The analysis is being conducted by leading environmental consultancy Resource Futures. Researchers are manually sorting, identifying and weighing representative samples, then attributing the collected waste packaging to nearly 200 categories. In addition, the team maps where packaging appears in the recyclables or residual waste streams and use Near Infrared technology to give a detailed breakdown of polymer types.
“This is vital information about how material flows through the system today – and what collection, sorting and recycling solutions are required to deliver a circular economy for flexible packaging and other packaging materials,” said Graham Houlder, CEFLEX Project Coordinator.
“Initial results from the first country studied show significant quantities of recyclable materials remaining in the mixed waste stream, suggesting the need to improve the capture and re-use of these materials,” he added.
These types of insights can help Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and other schemes to pinpoint what is needed to go ‘circular’ and fine tune eco-modulation. This will encourage the design of flexible packaging which boosts the amount of recycled content in a variety of end market applications, according to CEFLEX.
Venetia Spencer, Secretary General, PCEP, commented, “I am very excited by this project, which already in the early stages has brought enormous insight. Accurate understanding of the polyolefins collected via recycling and residual household waste streams, will play an important role in delivering PCEP’s commitment to enhance collection and sorting of polyolefins.”
Capture and capitalise on real-world material flows
Initial results of the first country analysis (UK) showed:
> 4595kg of material was manually sorted and categorised at two sites; of which 3240kg was residual waste and 1355kg was separately collected recyclables.
> 66.5% of flexible packaging found in the residual waste samples was categorised as recycle ready mono-material – this includes mono-PE, mono-PP, mono-PET, mono-paper and mono-aluminium.
Summary: currently there is a significant amount of ready-to-recycle flexible packaging appearing in residual waste samples, where it unlikely to be successfully returned to the economy and used again.
The research will analyse and compare the composition of flexible and rigid plastic packaging found in post-consumer household waste and recycling streams in seven key European markets. Fieldwork at two SUEZ sites in the UK took place in December 2020 and work on samples of waste from France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Spain is scheduled to take place in Spring 2021.
