Luxembourg, 18 September 2020 – As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment and strategy Guala Closures Group has developed eco-design guidelines for its five R&D centres (Italy, Mexico, UK, Ukraine and Luxembourg). These facilitate the development of sustainable closures by following four defined models for design, which are detailed in the full guidelines. Establishing a rigorous method to design sustainable products is fundamental to create a range of harmonised products, the Group believes. They are conceived with a view to providing real solutions for sustainable development. The purpose of the document is to outline all of the steps that designers should follow, from concept to finished product. Four models to achieve these goals are explained: Design to Reduce – a principle based on eco-design and on eliminating anything that is not necessary; Design to Change – abandoning finite resources and adopting recycled materials or materials produced from renewable sources; Design to Fade – this approach entails making the waste disappear by changing to biodegradable polymers and by using few, easily removable components; and Design to Revive – achieved by recovering and recycling the materials used in the closures. The company believes these guidelines are a major step in the development of sustainable packaging. They help to support clients’ needs and propose closures that meet key stakeholder expectations. Through this initiative and other actions, Guala Closures intends to achieve the challenging objective of using 35% of recycled materials by 2025. So these guidelines are further step in the Group’s commitment to supporting its clients in their own CSR strategies, with packaging that meets their consumers’ concerns and comply with growing retail requirements. Fulvio Bosano, R&D Director of Guala Closures Group, who coordinated the development and implementation of the eco-design guidelines commented, “These guidelines are a very big step towards providing our customers with products which meet their requirements on performance, quality and sustainable performance. They can be guaranteed Guala Closures has looked at every aspect in the development of the best closure for their needs.” The development of innovative sustainable closures started a few years ago with the commercial launch of Greencap®, a screw cap for wine that allows safe separation of aluminium and glass after use (developed by the R&D centre in Italy); and a luxury closure for tequila, made from a bio-based composite resin using 30% agave fibres (obtained from the waste that remains after the tequila distillation process) and 70% polypropylene (developed by the R&D centre in Mexico). Recently, a t-bar closure for a rum brand composed of a 100% recycled ABS plastic with agglomerated cork (developed by the R&D centre in the UK) was also added to the portfolio. Today, Guala Closures Group intends to further accelerate its commercial strategy by proposing a larger choice of closure solutions, with an increased focus on the selection of the most advanced alternative sustainable materials, as well as on the closures’ end of life. Maurizio Mittino, Sustainability Director for the Group said, “Guala Closures’ own CSR commitment is at the core of its future development plans. We recognise the need for a common strategy which will provide certainty and clarity to our customers. These guidelines help us to achieve this.” With its continuous development programme, the Group intends to launch, later in 2020, a comprehensive range of sustainable closures for wine, spirits, and beverages, all of which meet at least one of the four design models listed in the guidelines. Guala Closures Group Guala Closures Group has over 4,700 employees and 30 production facilities in five continents. It markets its products in more than 100 countries. The Group sells nearly 20 billion caps each year, with a turnover of 607 million euros in 2019. Thanks to a policy of continuous commercial development and technological innovation, the group is recognized as a world leader in the production of safety caps for spirits. It is a leading manufacturer of aluminium caps for spirits, wines and beverages. Since August 2018, Guala Closures S.p.A. has been listed on the STAR segment of the Italian Stock Exchange, joining the FTSE Italia Mid Cap Index in September 2019. Mondi partners with salzburgmilch and sp...
The PerFORMing removable range is the first in Europe to create 100% recyclable paper-based food trays Reduction of approximately 40 tonnes of plastic a year for dairy producer SalzburgMilch Reduces carbon footprint by two thirds compared to the previous packaging solution 16 September 2020 – Leading packaging and paper manufacturer, Mondi, is launching a fully recyclable 80% paper-based packaging solution for cold meats and cheese. The new packaging will reduce plastic usage for Austrian dairy producer SalzburgMilch by approximately 40 tonnes per year, compared to its previously used rigid plastic trays. Mondi has launched its innovative PerFORMing removable in partnership with SalzburgMilch for the brand SalzburgMilch Premium and the premium own-brand SPAR Natur*pur organic cheese slices. The shallow paper tray combines the recyclability of paper with the essential barrier properties of a thin plastic coating to keep food fresh and avoid waste. Mondi released its original PerFORMing range in 2019 and has continued to work hard to make it even more sustainable. The original product could be recycled in Austrian paper recycling streams. The updated product now consists of paper and fully removable plastic which can easily be separated from the paper tray allowing for 100% paper recycling across Europe. The product is made locally in Austria, meaning transportation is kept to a minimum and the overall carbon footprint is reduced. The base paper for the tray is Advantage Formable made predominantly from locally sourced wood and produced by Mondi Frantschach, while the trays are processed and coated by Mondi Zeltweg, both located in Austria. PerFORMing removable is part of Mondi’s EcoSolutions approach to find the most sustainable and fit for purpose packaging for its customers with a focus on replacing, reducing, and recycling. SalzburgMilch and SPAR are using Mondi’s product for their 175g packets of sliced cheese, which are available in SPAR stores across Austria. Switching to paper-based packaging offers numerous environmental benefits including being a renewable resource with higher recycling rates than other packaging materials. The paper industry accounts for less than 1% of all EU greenhouse gas emissions, while 72% of paper in Europe is recycled. Marko Schuster, COO Mondi Functional Paper & Films, said: “Food waste is a global issue and we want to play our part to ensure our packaging is Sustainable by Design and addresses the issue of food loss. We always had an aspiration to continue improving our PerFORMing range. The PerFORMing removable uses paper where possible, significantly reducing the carbon footprint, and plastic when useful, to extend the shelf life and help prevent food waste. As both components can easily be separated and the paper fully recycled across Europe, this is a big step for us with waste streams differing vastly across regions. We will continue to further develop our products as we work with partners to create a circular economy for sustainable packaging.” Andreas Gasteiger, Managing Director of SalzburgMilch, said: “Climate and environmental protection has always been a very important issue. We have already saved over 100 tonnes of plastic through numerous measures in the last three years and we are not resting on our laurels, which is why we have made further improvements to our new paper trays.” Dr. Gerhard Drexel, SPAR CEO, said: “Our initiative 'Save plastics together with SPAR' aims to avoid plastics completely or reduce them significantly. Mondi's paper-based and recyclable packaging creates innovative solutions for fresh products that could not be sold without packaging.” /ends Technical details about the product: Formable paper packaging with a patented barrier Made from natural brown paper (Advantage Formable Brown) Ideally suited for shallow food trays (e.g. for cheese, meat or fish) High symmetrical stretch for uniform formability Suitable for existing filling lines Results in 70% less plastic used compared to plastic trays 70% CO₂ reduction compare to plastic alternative About Mondi Mondi is a global leader in packaging and paper, contributing to a better world by making innovative, packaging and paper solutions that are sustainable by design. Our business is fully integrated across the value chain – from managing forests and producing pulp, paper and plastic films, to developing and manufacturing effective industrial and consumer packaging solutions. Sustainability is at the centre of our strategy and intrinsic in the way we do business. First position paper points to collabora...
CEFLEX recommends use of recyclable mono-materials for flexible packaging As part of its ‘Issue Alignment’ process CEFLEX stakeholders are working with Swiss University ETH to collect and assess topics which are essential to realising a circular economy for flexible packaging. These issues are being tackled individually to create considered and aligned positions on each topic. The result has been its first Position Paper on ways to achieve this goal. The first CEFLEX Position Paper, entitled ‘Accelerating the circular economy for flexible packaging – a recommendation for recyclable mono-materials’ is now being made available. Taking into account the current best-practice technologies established in Europe, CEFLEX strongly recommends the use of flexible packaging made from recyclable mono-materials. The paper clearly states the need to evaluate functional requirements of packaging and, when possible, to redesign existing flexible packaging to a recyclable mono-material. This recommendation chimes with the recently released CEFLEX ‘Designing for a Circular Economy’ guidelines, which gives practical advice and clarity on how to deliver significant environmental improvements without compromising functionality. Flexible packaging, as with other sectors, requires a major change in collaboration as well as innovation and investment to achieve a circular economy. Only by working together can flexible packaging collectively achieve the ambitious sustainability goals, recyclability targets and prevent waste and pollution along the value chain, according to the consortium. “Ensuring packaging is designed to be recycled into new, valuable materials, or flows back into the economy, is a cornerstone condition for creating a circular economy,” explained CEFLEX project coordinator Graham Houlder. “More than 80% of flexible packaging is mono-material Polyethylene (PE) or Polypropylene (PP) and we can grow this further; which will improve conditions for investment in infrastructure and help create sustainable end markets for the recycled materials.” “Quality mono-material inputs are key criteria for building a circular economy for flexible packaging,” says Arne Jost of mtm plastics, member of the Borealis Group. “Implementing the CEFLEX ‘Designing for a Circular Economy’ guidelines and this position paper work to increase the mono-material content in a bale of post-consumer film. This will be a welcome improvement for all recyclers and help accelerate end markets,” he added. Other alignment topics Identified include collection models and recyclate quality. The next priority for CEFLEX stakeholders is to examine collection models for flexible packaging in a circular economy and produce another position paper, after analysis of separate collection and post sorting of residual waste. Together, we work to make all flexible packaging in Europe circular by 2025. The initiative is committed to avoiding waste and pollution by redesigning consumer flexible packaging and ensuring appropriate collection and recycling infrastructure in all European countries. https://ceflex.eu/ImageContact PersonAlec Walker-LoveEmailalec@ceflex.euPhone32497487486 -

Pact, supplier of promising fire suppres...
Company’s Thermo Shield™ is a 100% recyclable wrap solution that exceeds proposed SAE G27 lithium battery packaging performance standards for air, land & sea. Waterbury, CT – PACT, LLC, an innovator of packaging and crating technologies, has joined the Council on Safe Transportation of Hazardous Articles (COSTHA), a not-for-profit industry association devoted to promoting dangerous goods transportation compliance both domestically and abroad. PACT’s acceptance to the organization comes following the successful launch of its Thermo Shield™, a paper-based, fire-resistant shipping wrap designed to prevent catastrophes caused by battery explosions during transport. Thermo Shield™ utilizes a revolutionary technology that actively and automatically cools the internal environment of a corrugated container. The 100% recyclable protective logistics product prevents damage to the outside shipping container, suppresses fumes or gasses from escaping, and limits external oxygen supply. The solution aligns with COSTHA’s mission of providing guidance and support for the shipping of potentially dangerous items. Among other services, the organization provides mission-critical regulatory information via code books (49 CFR, ADR, UN Orange Book, IATA, ICAO, IMDG), and other regulatory compliance tools. COSTHA also encourages shipping safety mentorship as part of quality personnel professional development and, through this enhanced instruction, heightened standards for handling and transporting hazardous materials. Comprising a lightweight pleated material with a non-toxic moisture vapor application that ensures the safety of lithium-ion products in transport, Thermo Shield™ can suppress thermal runaway and propagation at temperatures up to 800°C, and restrict the temperature outside the wrap itself to 80°C. In doing so, it addresses an important industry need: according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a lithium battery explosion occurs during shipping once every 10 days. Further, the majority of cells or battery packs are produced in Asia, leading to long transit times when shipping to the Western Hemisphere. COSTHA represents a wide variety of shippers, carriers, manufacturers, trade associations, training companies, and related businesses and associations. Its efforts include advocating for domestic and international regulatory harmonization, uniform enforcement, and the review and realignment of regulations based on risk during transport. It is this final criteria – risk during transport – in which Thermo Shield™ shines. The new solution is the only paper-based wrap solution that exceeds the proposed SAE G27 lithium battery packaging performance standards for safety in shipping via air, land and sea. The shipper also is lightweight and reusable, lending to cost efficiency both at initial purchase and during use. “Joining COSTHA ensures that PACT stays on the forefront of knowing and understanding all hazardous materials transportation compliance regulations.” said Rodger Mort, President of PACT, LLC. “It also allows us to offer our own insight regarding the role of innovation in improving transport safety.” For more information about Thermo Shield™, visit www.pactthermoshield.com. ### About PACT PACT is a US-based packaging and crating company providing complete off-the-shelf and custom solutions for the industrial, moving, shipping, and storage industries. How brand owners can communicate sustainability performance more effectively Information: AMSTERDAM (August 26, 2020) – A new White Paper from Trivium Packaging examines the role of traditional Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools, and argues the case for a more holistic approach that reveals the wider impact of packaging materials on the waste stream and shelf life. With origins in the 1960s, existing LCAs form the basis of international standards such as ISO 14040, and are especially valuable when assessing CO2 emissions. Some issues arise around the use of different tools and varying methods of calculation, but LCAs remain an important tool for brand owners seeking to measure sustainability performance and engage with consumers. There is room for improvement, and Jenny Wassenaar, VP Sustainability at Trivium, said that the new White Paper highlights how brand owners could take the next step and show that their packaging is truly sustainable: “Cradle-to-Gate, Cradle-to-Grave, and Circular LCAs have a role to play, but a more comprehensive Holistic Packaging Sustainability Assessment could give brand owners even more compelling sustainability credentials. Such an assessment would take into account all aspects relating to circularity such as recycled content, recycling rate, intrinsic yield, and substitution of primary resources.” Real-world performance of packaging materials varies widely. For example, 80% of metal is recycled in Europe, but only 41% of plastics. Jenny underlined that steel and aluminum perform also particularly well when a wider view of recycling is adopted: “Metal packaging is infinitely recyclable without a loss of quality or downcycling, and recycling aluminum saves 95% of the energy required for primary production. We know that packaging is a valuable communication channel for encouraging consumers to recycle waste, and prominent logos such as the ‘Metal Recycles Forever’ logo are part of this.” A Holistic Packaging Sustainability Assessment would also take into account the ability to protect products during transportation, and the expected shelf life, and how these factors impact expected food waste. The White Paper is available for download at TriviumPackaging.com Notes to Editor: Trivium Packaging is a global supplier of infinitely recyclable, metal packaging for the world’s leading brands.
